Geography: Mt. Vernon is 13.151 square miles in size. It is the County Seat of Jefferson County. The City is one hour east of St. Louis, Mo., one hour west of Evansville, Ind., ninety minutes north of Paducah, KY and two hours south of Champaign, IL. Transportation: Mt. Vernon is served by two exits (95 and 94) where I-64 and I-57 converge, with exit 80 also providing access to I-64 just southeast of town. As a strategic crossroads, the conjoined highways serve an average 35,900 vehicles per day and an average of 12,750 trucks and semi’s each day. Mt. Vernon is the junction of three Class I rail lines: CSX (via Evansville-Western Short Line), Norfolk Southern and Union Pacific. Milano Railway Logistics Services is an approved active transloader at the junction site. Mt. Vernon Outland Airport offers commercial-rated facilities and a 6,500-foot by 150-foot main runway capable of handling Boeing 757-sized aircraft, with 24/7 emergency response services on-site. SRT Aviation Inc. provides FAA-Certified repair, quick-turn fuel and maintenance services.
Population Demographics: Mt. Vernon has a 2015 population of 15,136 people. This is down from the US Census count of 15,277. Like most rural communities across the U.S., our population has decreased year-over-year since 2000, when our population was 16,269. However, the rate of population decrease has slowed. From 2000 to 2010, we experienced an annual average decrease of -0.61% (99 people) per year. And from 2010 to 2015, the decrease has slowed to -0.18% (28 people). The 2016 median age is 39.7.
As of 2016, there are 6,606 households in Mt. Vernon, with an average household size of 2.23 people. Median household income has increased year-over-year, and the rate of increase is picking up. In 2000, median household income was $28,145, increasing to $32,219 by 2010, an annual average increase of 1.45% per year. By 2015, the median household income had risen to $36,218, an annual average increase of 2.48% per year.
